How To Adjust A New Martingale Collar

Catalog > How To Adjust A New Martingale Collar

Welcome!  If You've found yourself on this page you're not the only one!  We often receive inquiries from new Greyhound adopters or people who haven't tried a Martingale collar before and need a bit of help when the new collar arrives in the mail.  Martingales look a little different than a regular old dog collar. They slip on over the dog's head and don't have a buckle to open.  The collars are shipped to you in their smallest size to fit into the mail package and the collar needs to be opened up first before you try putting it on your dog. (The dog appreciates that too so it doesn't get stuck on his head).  It's quite simple to do and once you see how the martingale collars work, you'll probably never need instructions again!  Below are some instructions and pictures! (Click on each picture for a closer look and more tips).

1. When your collar arrives it will be shipped and packaged in it's smallest size (un-expanded).  Martingale collars have a back adjusting buckle and you will find that over to one side of the collar close to where our Regal Hound Designs brand name tag is sewn.  (step 1, step 2)

2.Before you attempt to put the collar over your dog's head make sure to expand the collar to it's largest size first.  Do not try and force the collar over your dog's head without expanding it fully first (your dog will thank you for it)!  To expand the collar, you will need to use one hand to hold the back adjusting buckle and the other hand to feed the collar gently through the buckle. Feed the collar through until it opens up and the back adjusting buckle is over to the opposite side of the collar away from the Regal Hound Designs tag.  (see steps 3, 4, 5)

3.Then slip the Martingale collar over your dog's head and position in a comfortable spot around the middle section of the dog's neck.  While the collar is on your dog, feed the collar back through the adjusting buckle and adjust the collar to fit your dog and take up any slack.  Collar should be snug but loose enough to fit two finger widths underneath. A loose collar can fall off over the dog's head and not tighten properly.(see steps 6, 7, 8)

4. From time to time and prior to going for a walk check the adjustment of the collar to make sure it has a proper fit.
